"Local company
continues to expand"
Much needed jobs to be created
GEWS LTD has today announced that they have secured further gully
cleaning contracts which will mean a job boost for the local economy.
The company, a drainage and liquid waste specialist, based at Cookes
Industrial Estate, Penrhyndeudraeth, anticipates that it will need to
increase its production workforce by up to 25% and will be recruiting
locally over the coming weeks.
GEWS Tankers and Jetters are a familiar sight in and around North Wales
but this latest contract will see the company beginning to build a
presence in Shropshire. GEWS will be conducting the work in conjunction
with the Enterprise group. The
Enterprise group is a major UK support services company maintaining
infrastructure and serving the utility, central and local government
markets.
Dafydd Thomas, GEWS founder and Managing Director said: “We would like
to extend our wholehearted gratitude to Enterprise for this opportunity
and for its unrelenting support. “Our gully cleaning operations began
for Accord PLC, with whom we built up an excellent working relationship,
in Anglesey in 2006. “Ever since Enterprise acquired Accord PLC in
September 2007
we have been very
encouraged by the fact that our affiliation with the group has continued
and flourished. The trust and faith Enterprise is now placing in our
ability to conduct this work effectively is testimony to the hard work
and dedication of our staff.”
GEWS has seen its gully cleaning work grow steadily over recent years
and now conducts this work for a number of local authorities across
North Wales. This latest expansion will see the business cross the
threshold from a small to a medium size enterprise.
Llyr
Williams GEWS Operations Manager commenting on the impact the recession
is having on the business said: “We have witnessed a decline in demand
for certain services however this has been offset by growth in other
areas, this I believe is because of the broad range of services and
expertise we can offer. Overall we have been able to maintain our sales
performance this year and project a 15% revenue growth for this coming
financial year. “Fortunately for us due to the nature of the business
we are in, people will always need to use drains and roads and these
infrastructures require continuous maintenance.”
With regards to the company’s impending recruitment drive he added: “We
recently invested a great deal in further Staff training in preparation
for the new work and as a company are thankful that we received support
from the Welsh Assembly Government in order to do so.
“Currently we are locating a suitable depot to act as a regional base
for the work as well as searching for living accommodation for the
staff.
“We
operate by alternating a proportion of our staff across various
divisions and this provides variety in their daily work whilst at the
same time increasing their skills set that in turn allows us to react
efficiently to the changing needs of our customers.
“In
order to meet the labour demands of this contract and our other
pre-existing work commitments we are confident we can find talented and
skilled individuals locally to join our teams.”
Figures reveal that number of people claiming Job Seekers allowance in
Gwynedd during December 2008 was 2164 up 607 from December 2007. Against
the backdrop of these staggering numbers Dafydd Thomas was modest about
the contribution his company can make to enhance the local economy. He
concluded: “I am saddened by the continuous news of job losses in the
area, particularly in the manufacturing sector.
“Creating even a single new post can have a substantial influence on
lives and wellbeing of a family surviving in the current economic
climate.
“If
we can create a dozen new jobs over the coming year I will be extremely
happy as this could mean a dozen less families suffering financial
hardship and could possibly mean a few less families losing their homes
in the region.
“I
think it’s good to hear of a local company announcing some positive news
for a change.
“Admittedly In the grand scheme of things, it may not be much, but at
least it’s a step in the right direction!”
